Dark Horse Tres

I hate to admit it, but it’s true! My good friend Andrew went to Wisconsin to visit a relative and I gave him a list of beers to buy, including a couple beers from New Glarus. One of them being the stellar fruit beer called Wisconsin Belgian Red. Funny thing is that the Dark Horse Tres was the hardest beer on the list to find. I begged him to look at one more liquor store before giving up on this intriguing beer. And guess what? Here it is… Tasting like a very small amount of blueberry and a whole lot of stout, Dark Horse Tres is part of a series of five beers Dark Horse released as part of their Holiday Stout Series. With an extremely low ABV of 4.5%, you’d think this beer would lack in flavor. Quite the contrary my friend, this is a really nice (yet subtle) stout. If you find yourself in the state of Wisconsin, I recommend picking up a four-pack of this little delight. Hell, buy some of the others while you’re at it. I’m sure they are delicious, too.

    Great reviews!

Just found your site and have been working my way through your reviews. Good stuff!. I too am a big Hopslam fan. I’m down to 3 6pcks.

Some beers I have become fond of:

DogFish Head ApriHop – My wife’s new favorite (and she does not like IPAs ?)
    Avery White Rascal
Arcadia Whitsun – Big favorite at the local restaurant in MI.

    Keep up the great work.

  2. You can get the Dark Horse beers in a variety of states, not just Wisconsin. I’ve had both Two & Fore, skipping Tres because I didn’t have room for all three… unfortunately it sounds like I made the wrong choice between Tres and Fore.

I have also tried their Perkolator doppelbock (doppelbock w/coffee) and wasn’t impressed. I will probably skip this brewery’s stuff in the future. :-\

    • Hi Amy – You can see all the states this beer is available in above in the review. I list this for every beer to help show where it’s available. But yeah, they have a couple beers that are pretty darn tasty, and for the most part I haven’t had anything that has left a lasting impression. If you weren’t blown away by Too or Fore then you’ll be safe passing on the Tres. Double Crooked Tree and Reserve Special Black Bier are worth a hunt…

Great review of an amazing beer. I just discovered Tres this summer and am patiently waiting for a keg. We’re planning a road trip to Marshall, MI in December so as to acquire 3 kegs of Dark Horse’s Winter Stout Series.
