Ahhh…the Belgian beers – how they make me happy! I rarely find one that doesn’t just hit the spot. There’s must be something about the tradition of brewing in their country because it seems to be spot on nearly every time. The same can be said for this beauty of a Strong Ale as well. Gulden Draak from Brouwerij Van Steenberge just punches you in the head and reminds you that you’re not in control of The Golden Dragon. The Golden Dragon is in control of you. At 10.5% ABV, this beer warms the insides nicely and quickly takes the edge off. Like many of the beers I review here at The Hopry, Gulden Draak goes through a secondary bottle fermentation which helps bump up the effervescence and really helps highlight those amazing toffee and grape bubblegum flavors that are almost always present for me. Did I mention how insanely cool the bottle and cap are, too? It’s one of my favorites actually. And the fact that I have the glass to go along with this beer makes me a very happy young man.

One of my favorites. I used to get it for $2.99 at World Market and now I can’t find it anywhere for less than $5. Great review.
