Red Hook Tripel

Tripel ales are slightly different from dubbels and quadrupels in that they are traditionally brewed with pale malts that give them a beautiful light golden color. Many people have even referred to the tripel as a “strong pale ale.” Dubbels (and especially quads), on the other hand, are typically darker and murkier in color and tend to pour a reddish-brown, raisin-like color. The color on the Red Hook Tripel, however, is definitively tripel. As you hold it up to the light you become witness to one of the most clear and beautiful golden-colored beers since the Tripel Karmeliet. The smell is also very intriguing as it brings notes of white flowers, spices, and a faint amount of vanilla. But once you dig in to the flavor of the beer you will notice that it falls a bit flat on the palate. In other words, it fails to deliver as nicely on the tongue as the nose would suggest. And that’s not even to say this beer has a bad flavor, but it just isn’t as flavorful as one would hope for a 10.2% ABV beer. If you consider yourself a connoisseur of the tripel, I would say you can probably pass this one up. If, on the other hand, you are trying to teach a new beer novice what a tripel tastes like, this would be a very nice starting point. I have to score this one a little low because of the letdown on the palate. But I will tell you the Red Hook Tripel is one of the best looking beers I’ve seen in some time. It smells beautiful, too, and that means something…
