Surly Furious

Get Surly! That’s there motto at Surly Brewing Company. So that’s what I’ve done in my latest session at The Hopry. I did it from a can too, which is mainly because Surly puts most of their year-round beers in cans. Of the several I’ve now had I must tell you that they are all well worth hunting down. This one, in particular, the Furious, is one of the best canned IPAs out there. Only the Modus Hoperandi from Ska Brewing has scored as well here. What makes this one such a joy is how amazingly flavorful and aromatically beautiful it is. To know this much can come from a can gives me great hope for the American craft beer industry. Not to say bottles are bad by any stretch of the imagination, but cans definitely let you break free and move about to more places (beaches, camping, sporting events, etc) than bottles. But everything I love about a good IPA is in this can: citric, piney, dank hops with enough malts to balance it all out. Again, I could have just drank it straight from the can, but I highly recommend pouring this one in to a glass to let it open up and become what it really is – a SOLID IPA.

I liked the fact that you mentioned the piney attribute, I noticed the exact same thing!

Nice review, Surly is one of my favorites.

    And according to this: http://apps.carleton.edu/voice/?story_id=576791&issue_id=576203

…they don’t filter their beer. And sadly I believe you can only get in (store or bar) in the metro Minneapolis area these days. Kind of makes it a special treat when I’m there, I guess.
