Having originally done some research on this beer I determined through various sources that Tröegs Nugget Nectar was an IPA. However, one only needs to read the label on the bottle to see that it’s actually classified an Imperial Amber by the brewery. Well who I am I to argue with the guys who actually brew the beer? Regardless of the style, I had pretty high hopes for what it would taste like. It has been on my to-do list for quite some time and has been put in the same class as some of the other greats like Bell’s Hopslam and Russian River’s Pliny the Elder. Needless to say, my expectations were set pretty high. What happened in the video is nothing but bad luck. Unfortunately, it was later determined (after shooting the video) that the bottle I had received was over a year old. As I’ve said at least a hundred times, hops need to be refrigerated or they will die a very quick and sad death. My only assumption at this point is that this is what happened to my bottle of Nugget Nectar. When I initially opened the bottle there was a little bit to work with, but magically it all disappeared within a minute or two. So now, I am on a mission to get another bottle of this beer to review on the show so I can accurately give my impression of the beer. Hopefully then I can set the record straight for those who clearly think I’m an untalented ass clown for giving this beer an 80/100.

Wow, a year old? Yea this beer deteriorates after 2-3 months. You definitely should try it again. I wouldn’t put it in the same class as Hopslam. But its definitely higher then an 80 imo. I would give it a 92 or 93. I’ll see if i can’t get you a fresh bottle.

80!? No!!!!
So I’ll start by saying I’m not a hophead, and I generally dislike IPAs. A beer is about balance, and while something like Pliny does a fantastic job of building a base beer that can support an enormous hop load, it seems like few others do. I just had Ruination, and it was a pass… nothing bad in terms of flavor, but unrestrained and unfocused. Seemed like they gathered up a pile of good stuff and squished it into a kettle, but didn’t really bother trying to refine it meet a grander vision…. just a sledgehammer to the palate.
Point being: I’m finicky about IPAs.
My girlfriend is even worse. She specifically hates bitterness. Period. She even hates coffee. It’s hard to get her to drink anything that isn’t a classicaly styled and somewhat aged Belgian for that reason.
But Nugget Nectar… that’s a damn fine beer. Just beautifully cohesive. I’m actually somewhat fond of their Imperial Amber designation… seems fitting, if a little strange. And the kicker was that my girlfriend loves it, which was unexpected to say the least, and is a sign that they did a great job blending the bitterness into the malt bill. The only bad thing about the beer is that they did so well that now I have to share my stash.
It’ll probably never make my top 10, but it’ll always have a place in my fridge.

Of course… just having fun. Here’s to hoping you get yourself a fresh bottle. And if you still don’t think it’s world class… eh. Some of us are simply untalented ass clowns. But that’s okay… they’re needed to make the rest of us feel superior.

Sir,
First of all it is an Imperial Amber ale. Second, there are Palisade, Columbus, and also Simcoe hops in this beer. You indicated that this particular beer was a year old. You are missing the entire experience, you need this when it is released, after a year you lose a ton of the hop profile, this happens with time. This should be a malt-hops balanced beer.
