Oskar Blues Ten Fidy

Whoppers and tobacco – tobacco and Whoppers – in it together…how…why? Who cares? The Oskar Blues Ten Fidy is dee-frickin’-licious! That’s because there’s something very manly going on in this beer, and it starts from the minute you pour it straight from the can. The aromas immediately start wafting out of the glass and into the room and fill it with chocolate, coffee, Whoppers, and tobacco. Then at about the same time, the most perfect looking head you’ve ever seen begins to slowly mushroom cloud over the top of the beer. You just know it’s going to be a good 12 ounces ahead of you. Then the first sip hits you and you’re met with a nice punch of heat and bittersweet chocolate. However, it’s the vanilla, dark cave, and smoky tobacco aftertaste that really shines and proves just how good Ten Fidy truly is. I’m not going to lie, I was very sad to see the end of this beer, but it is going on the to-do list to get more. Maybe next time I’ll have a cigar with it and take it to the next level.

  1. I have a couple cans of Ten FIDY that I received as extras in a trade myself. I’m even more excited to try them after this glowing review.

Regarding smoked porters: I was surprised to find late last year that Stone Smoked Porter disappointed the Hell out of me. Your mileage may vary of course; I tend to be real strict with my porter reviews.

That beer sure looks purdy. I can’t wait to dig into this one later tonight! As always, great descriptions.

Great review. One of my favorite beers and one of my favorite musicians! Ten Fidy is an amazing beer. If it came in a 750 with a waxed top and had a once-a-year release date it would be one of the most popular beers around! Looking forward to the day when Oskar Blues is distributed in KS or MO.

  5. I was reading some reviews for this on BA and someone suggested that the FIDY stands for the acronym, (F)**K the (I)ndustry (D)o it (Y)ourself. I don’t know if there is any truth to that or not. But i found it interesting.

Nice review! I love everything from Oskar Blues. In fact, their Old Chub is probably my favorite scotch ale. Their Gordon Imperial IPA is also fantastic! Makes me want to drink one now :)

  7. Just finished a can. I can’t believe how much this one looks and smells like Victory’s Storm King Stout. Very similar flavors to me. The mouthfeel of the Ten FIDY is a bit softer though with less carbonation. This is a really nice stout. I’m going 94/100.

Hmmmm…. I have a case of Storm King I’ve been working through and some Ten FIDY on hand. I’m not sure I see the resemblance. The Ten FIDY is darker, smoother, less hoppy, more chocolately. They’re both big stouts, but they share little else in common. I like Storm King (going through the case one beer a month to see how it ages), but I absolutely love Ten FIDY. Hands down a better beer (in one man’s humble opinion).

I should have mentioned that the last 2 Storm kings I’ve had I aged to just under 19 months. So those were the samples that were fresh in my mind. Alot of the citrus hoppiness that SK usually has had faded out. I agree that fresh SK is very hoppy for a big stout. Anyway, it was just one humble mans opinion.

        Cheers!

If Storm King approaches this beer after some age on it, I’ll be a very happy man :)

I just had my March Storm King… getting to about a half-year of age, so still pretty young. But after having the Ten FIDY and giving Big Mike some consideration, I think he’s right. The Storm King is hop dominated and resiny, and it’s going to take a long time for that to age out, but behind that is a pretty good approximation of Ten FIDY. King will never have FIDY’s smoothness, though.

  10. I had a can of Ten Fidy on New Year’s Eve that I had in my fridge for almost a year, and it was just awesome. Not a lot of head, but super chocolatey and smooth. Just a staggeringly good beer.

    • It’s definitely an enjoyable beer. If you let it warm a touch next time it may pour with more head. But as long as the taste is there, ehhh… it’s all good.

I was sitting down enjoying and figured I would check to see if you had a review for one… sho-nuff.

I couldn’t help but think barrel aged several times over when I was drinking this. It isn’t as pronounced as some other barrel aged beers, but those same flavors are there. What a delicious beer from a can. Keep up the good work, love the videos, and updates while I am at work help make the day go a little quicker.

    • Thank you Glenn. Glad you like the videos. And yeah, this thing has flavors for days. It’s been a while since I had one, but I remember comparing the Dark Lord to it, which speaks volumes for this beer. Cheers!
