Well here we are finally – a whole week dedicated to my love for hops. Why only a week Ginger Beard? I don’t know, either. I could easily do a month’s worth of hop sessions, but the truth is that you’d all get bored and I would be bloated beyond belief. LOL! So here are three hopped up monsters I’ve been excited to share with you for quite a whole now. First up is the Mikkeller 1000 IBU Imperial IPA. It’s created a bit of controversy on the Internets, and for good reason. WTF is with 1000 IBUs? Who cares? Bring it on is what’s up. Now…I’m not going to say I had an out-of-body experience drinking this gem, but I came damn close. As most of you hopheads can attest, we are constantly looking for the hoppiest beers on the market. Well my friends…I’ve found it. This bad boy is a hopocalypse if I’ve ever tasted one. You are immediately met with an mushroom cloud of hop aromas out of the glass (definitely some centennial and simcoe), and just behind that is a good amount of sweet caramel malt aroma. And then the flavor just pummels your mouth…DAMN DUDE! It’s crazy, but much more balanced than you would expect. After all, it’s only 9.6% ABV – yes only – this should be an 18% beer. Anyway just go get one and enjoy the mayhem…seriously! To purchase from The Wine and Cheese Place, just click here.

Good to know… I really need to make a trip out to your shop. I’ve heard very VERY good things about it.

Big props to Wine and Cheese place!
Kansas City folks also have a oasis in the beer desert called Gomer’s Lee’s Summit. They have several cases of the 1000 IBU for sale there. Aaron does a good job keeping the good stuff in stock.
Mark, it was good meeting you at Harry’s Country Club. I’m all about getting the good stuff to KC, so I’ll be in touch with you soon. There may be some free beer in your future!

Is was good to meet you as well. My wife and I had a great time tasting the Dieu du Ciel products. She has been dreaming about the Scotch Ale since we left. As for Aaron, he is definitely the man. I go to him as much as possible. Even if he does work on the other side of town from me…

“Fridge the Hops” might just be my new favorite saying. Found you via Wine & Cheese’s blog and now you’re on my RSS feed.
I had the same reaction to this beer. There was concern that it would be undrinkable, but Mikkeller really did an outstanding job balancing the hops and malt and somehow kept the ABV down.

For what its worth, I just drank a bottle of 1000 IBU that was ordered from The Wine & Cheese Place and it was suuuuuuuuuuuuper malty.

You know what’s interesting to me? I had one of these again this week and the high end hops are dying out very quick in this thing. There is definitely a ton of malt, but the first one I had (this review) didn’t seem as malty simply because of the insane amount of hops masking it. But yeah, definitely a lot of malt in there.

Oddly enough that bottle I had last night made for a fairly tasty American Barleywine. The malt flavors were deep, smooth, and accentuated by the lingering pine and orange from the hops.
