Peruvian Morning

Hopry Short # 7 | Central Waters| Peruvian Morning| 5% ABV
Imperial Stout | Amherst, WI | Rating: 88/100

Central Waters Brewing is a brewery I have very little experience with. In fact, this beer called Peruvian Morning is the only one I’ve ever had. It came to me by way of an extra in a trade and I’ve been anxious to try it since. It is an Imperial Stout brewed with coffee and aged in oak bourbon barrels. It pours a lot lighter than one would expect from an oak-aged Imperial Stout, though you probably can’t tell on camera. It appears to be darker than it really is. The smell, though, is closer to being on point with its dark roasted malt character that only brings a touch of coffee along with it. Once you take a first sip, however, the flavor far surpasses the almost underwhelming nose. All-in-all, this taste about like it should, which I would say is very good. However, I’m left wondering if this would be a sub-standard beer without the coffee and bourbon to help coax it along. Well…I’ll probably never know, so I’ll just have to say that this one is very good for what it is…

Others: Odell Bourbon Barrel Stout, North Coast Old Rasputin XII, Goose Island BCS

This is one I’ve wanted to try for a while. Glad to hear you liked it. I’ve had their regular coffee stout which I thought was very good. They also make the Bourbon Barrel Barleywine that I’ve wanted desperately to try.

I’ve got a Central Waters [Brewer's Reserve] Bourbon Barrel Stout in my fridge. I may just bust the cap on that tonight.

I gave it a 3.7 (B) on Beer Advocate but only because the mouthfeel and appearance are pretty average. It has a great balance to it and a fully realized bourbon flavor w/ a bit of coffee grounds and Russel Stover’s caramel chocolate candy thing going on. It tastes like Canadian Breakfast Stout-light, and I mean that in the best way possible.

    • I was pretty surprised by the color as well. As I said, the camera made it look darker than it was. It was only a touch darker than…say…a brown ale. Anyway, thanks for the review…

I’ve never even heard of Central Waters Brewing. That’s how much experience I have with them. Not sure if they’re available in PA or not. I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

    Cheers!

I am in love with this beer! I live about 40mins away from CW brewing co and it is hard to find this beer when it is released in the winter. Not much else to say but if you have the chance check out there other big beers. Bourbon Barrel Barleywine is the best of the line up…………
