Portsmouth Gose

Session # 119 | Portsmouth | Gose | 4.5% ABV
Gose | Portsmouth, New Hampshire | Rating: 87/100

Gose (pronounced Go-zuh), a German sour wheat beer similar to the Berliner Weisse, is one of the few styles for which I have had zero experience. Until now, of course, with the Portsmouth Gose. Having originally been brewed in Leipzig, Germany, Gose are starting to slowly pop up in some of America’s more adventurous breweries. They are brewed with at least 50% malted wheat and are further enhanced with a touch of lactic acid and salt. In Germany, they would brew this beer with water from Gose Creek which is said to have produced salty water. In order to remain true to the style, brewers today have to add a small amount of salt to help give it that “mineral-like” character. With the Portsmouth Gose, it pours the color of a warm summer day with miles and miles of frothy egg-white head. The nose immediately puts out lots of lemon, minerality, and a light floral funk (from the lactic acid). The flavor, while exactly like the nose, is very fresh and enjoyable. It’s literally like opening a bottle of sunshine, though with a touch of funkiness. Overall, Portsmouth Brewery has given me a very good idea of what the style tastes like. And at a very low 4.5% ABV, I could drink this one regularly. Look for some more Gose on the show soon because I’m very intrigued by this style.

Awesome review. I’ve never even heard of this style before and now I’m very intrigued by it. I’ll have to try to find some examples.

    Cheers!

Never had a goze. I don’t think we can get any around here can we?

Did you get my texts about the tasting?
