Iron Fist Dubbel Fisted

Session # 124 | Iron Fist | Dubbel Fisted | 8.1% ABV
Dubbel | Vista, California | Rating: 89/100

One year ago: Brasserie d’Orval Orval

First of all I’d like to give a personal shout out to Austin Tretwold for reminding me of the brilliant song I’ve posted today by Grouper. I can listen to this song on repeat and daydream my ass off. And who doesn’t need to daydream once in a while?

As for the beer Tim and I will be sharing with you today, it’s called Iron Fist’s Dubbel Fisted. It’s a Belgian-style Dubbel that neither of us has ever had before. We love it when we get to bust open a new beer that we literally have no pre-conceived ideas about, and this is one of them. Having only seen a recent video that StumpyJoeJr posted on The YooToobs (click here) and then getting this one in a recent trade from Big Bad Jon, I had very little idea of what the brewery was about. What poured out was quite nice for a Dubbel. The color is dark ruby and burnt caramel with an impressively creamy off-white head. Sticking our nose in the glass we couldn’t really pull out a ton of aroma. What we did get was subtle hints of dark fruits and light Belgian yeast. The taste is a bit more revealing as it gives you some caramel components up front followed by nice plum and raisins. Overall, the balance is nice and helps facilitate the flavors. While Dubbel Fisted is not a face-melter by any stretch, it is a very well-crafted beer. Tim and I agreed that we’d be happy to drink this one again.

I’m actually digging what these guys are doing. So far all their beers have been pretty clean and easy to drink with a focus on EU styles, which is a nice change from what has dominated the SD market. (And they accomplished the not so easy task of making a Kolsch I actually like that is close to its German counterpart.) I will say that the Dubbel has improved since their opening and in fact I have half a growler in my fridge that I just got filled Sunday to finish off tonight. Very promising start for a new brewery.

    • It was definitely a very good beer. As I said, I’d be happy to drink it again. Would also like to try some others down the road potentially…

    • Good! Thanks for the feedback, Mike. I’ve said it before, YouTube is great for the amount of people it reaches (and brings to a site like this), but their quality has really started to lack. Plus, I think Vimeo just puts a lot more care in the quality of their player.
