Session # 151 | New Old Lompoc | C-Note IPA | 6.9% ABV
American Double / Imperial IPA | Portland, Oregon | Rating: 84/100
One year ago: Avery Black Tot
The first beer this week comes from Portland, which is one of my top three favorite beer cities. The brewery is New Old Lompoc and the beer is their C-Note Imperial Pale Ale. I probably should have called it out better in the video but this is not an India Pale Ale, it’s an Imperial Pale Ale. The name C-note itself comes from the fact that they add seven different types of “C” hops in the beer. I won’t list them here, but I called them out in the video. From the bottle and in to the glass this beer was on the darker end of burnt orange. The off-white head was nothing over the top. The aroma was definitely hoppy and leaned more to the piney side. There was a touch of over-ripened mango, but not a lot of citrus. With 100 IBUs the bitterness was about where it should be, however the sweetness could have been bumped up a touch more to support them. Not a bad start to the week.
Check out all sessions of The Hopry here.
This beer can be found in these states.

Hi Mark, congratulations on another great review. When you mentioned the abv of C-Notes IPA is 6.9%, with 100 IBUs, that made me think of Surly Furious at 6.5% abv, and 99 IBUs. How would you compare the two beers, since you have reviewed both? I am guessing that Furious was sweeter?

Thanks Brian. I would say that the Surly is much brighter, meaning that the dry-hopping seems to have been more of the focus. While it definitely has a lot of bitterness, the C-Note wasn’t quite as hoppy on the aroma and flavoring end of things. I use the word dank a lot and I remember Furious being just that. Can’t remember the sweetness level off the top of my head, though.

Great review Mark as usual. I gotta tell you though one thing that bugs me is you post your score on the review. I would rather watch the review till the end and then see the score. Its like telling people the end of the movie just before they watch it. Its also hard to miss, I try to avoid seeing it but most of the time I do anyways.
