Session # 154 | Beer Valley | Leafer Madness | 9% ABV
American Double/ Imperial IPA | Ontario, Oregon | Rating: 76/100
One year ago: Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
On the eastern border of Oregon lies a small town called Ontario. It’s not only minutes from Idaho but it’s also home to a very small brewery called Beer Valley. Their Imperial Pale Ale called Leafer Madness is one that I was most excited to try this week. What I ended up with, however, was the least pleasing of the beers we’ll be sharing. The color was a touch clearer than the rest we’ve looked at, and oddly enough it looked a lot like a wheat beer. The head was traditional and a bit of hop haze showed in the glass. Right off the bat, the aroma was lacking here. The name Leafer Madness made me imagine much more pine and citrus, but I was mainly left with sweet malt and some grassy pine. The flavors were not what I’d expected, either. A lot of bitterness and a little grass character were at the forefront followed only by a little malt sweetness. In the end, my enjoyment level of this beer was far less than what I had hoped. Not a lot of Madness to be found.

great review, i like seeing beers that show up scoring like this, not every beer will be a winner. is it possible this beers passed its prime?

Yeah, it’s totally possible. But I like to read what others have said when I think I may have had an off beer and it looks like several others were on the same page as me. Not saying this was extremely old, but I don’t think it was brand new either. Again, another reason why I wish breweries would label their bottles.
