Session # 159
Schlafly | Bière de Garde
Bière de Garde | St. Louis, Missouri | 7% ABV
One year ago: Beer Collection Video
Living in Kansas City, you hear a lot of debate around who’s got the best Missouri brewery. Kansas City tends to support Boulevard and St. Louis leans to Schlafly. I admit that I’ve always been a Boulevard supporter, and as a result have generally skipped over Schlafly’s offerings. But today I put my devotions aside to try something that will probably be good for me. Today’s beer is Schlafly’s Bière de Garde, and it comes with a fair amount of respect on the various beer rating sites. It poured a very beautiful warm orange color with a quickly dissipating eggshell-colored head. The aromas, while not explosive, were primarily of yeast, caramel, and orange followed by a touch of grassy floral character in the back. The mouthfeel was great, as was the bitterness and carbonation. Flavors of yeast and light caramel make the biggest impression, and I seemed to have missed any tartness that might have been present. There was a nice soft touch of orange to tie those flavors all together. Overall this was just a very pleasant beer to drink. I will definitely purchase another one and try to enjoy it this spring or summer. Rating: 88/100

Production values FTW! Trying out some new camera angles, eh?

Camera angles FTW!!! I’ve wanted to do these for a long time, but Windows Movie Maker never allowed me to do “cutaways” in editing.

You really need to try Schlafly’s AIPA and Bourbon Barrel Stout.

I’ve actually had both of those. The A IPA really took me aback. That thing was really nice. Haven’t seen it for a while so it must be a seasonal. But I will definitely get one on the show when they come back out.
