Session # 179
Upright | Gose
Gose | Portland, OR | 5.2% ABV
One year ago: Russian River Temptation
The Gose style is one that I have really fallen in love with lately. It’s not just a Wheat Ale and it’s not just a Sour Ale. It’s actually both. Then they make it even more complex by adding a touch of salt to give the style a salinity (or ‘minerality’) that pushes it over the edge. Of the only three I’ve had, though, I will tell you that Upright Brewing out of Portland, Oregon’s Gose has made my favorite thus far. As I poured it from the huge 750ml green bottle I was met with a cloudy orange liquid topped with a very pale head that dissipated very quickly. The aroma wafted out of the glass way before I could even get close to sticking my nose in my glass. It was full of barnyard funk with lemon tartness and a slight amount of salinity and Belgian yeast. The flavor was not far off with its beautiful (and manageable) tartness right up front. Soon after that, the skunk, funk, and salinity followed. Mouthfeel is very carbonated with a nice refreshing and cleansing finish. Overall, I would consider this a great beer. If you want to ease yourself into sour ales, this would be a great place to start. Rating: 94/100

Interesting. I’ve never seen anything like that up here in Ontario. I’m still waiting to try my first sour when it becomes available shortly (Lindemans Cuvee Rene)

I just read about this style in a homebrew magazine and have been on the lookout for some ever since. I’ll have to go back through your episodes to find the previous examples. Have you ever tried one out of the traditional German-style bottle? The ones featured in the magazine had long, thin necks over almost a ball-like base.

I haven’t but I would definitely love to have one. It’d be a bottle to display afterwords for sure.

Really enjoyed this review from the couch! It’s getting hot, eh? Reminded me of those early reviews, Your style is so refined, man, even back when you first started. Thanks for this one — hope I can find it in LA.

Hey Mark,
Thanks for turning me on to a new style. I’ve really been into sours, wheats and saisons this summer so this sounds right up my alley. I’ll have to search one out. Glad to see the website is still bad-ass. Keep up the good work and let me know if you need anything from Texas again.
Cheers,
Travis

I haven’t had Uprights gose, but I did get to try Portsmouth’s gose and really enjoyed it. I wish they were easier to get a hold of. Good review as always!

That one was very good, too. I wouldn’t mind trying to get another one but those are hard to get because you have to buy them at the brewery and they only brew it occasionally. I just hope more breweries start making them, because it’s definitely something I’d buy.

I’m prettyyyyyy jealous of this session. I would love to try a variety of Upright beers. I know of a couple of online sources for them, but I’m pretty strapped for cash until the fall.

I know, I’ve been trying like hell to get some of their stuff for a long time. I even reached out to the brewer, but he kind of blew me off (oh well).

Never had this style but definitely want to now! Think you drink this pretty fresh or could letting it sit for a bit do any good?

Because it’s sour it may be able to last a year or so, but I would drink sooner rather than later.
