Session # 192
Green Flash | Silva Stout
Imperial Stout | San Diego, CA | 10.1% ABV
One year ago: Goose Island Night Stalker
And just like that we come to the end of Green Flash week on The Hopry. Feels like it went by in a day. Maybe that’s because I reviewed all these in a day! LOL! Anywho, today’s beer is the brewery’s barrel-aged stout that was release at the brewery only in four packs. It’s called Silva Stout (which is named after brewmaster Chuck Silva). I got one bottle and have been reserving it for the day Green Flash became available here in KC. Having had the Double Stout the night before, I was hoping the Silva Stout would be much better with the barrel-aging process. As I poured it I could already smell oak and vanilla, but the sight of the beautiful head really made me happy. Digging further in the glass, those vanilla and oak characters really came to the front. It was soon followed by dark chocolate pudding and some roasted grain and malt. The flavor was just as I’d hoped, which is miles ahead of the Double Stout. The vanilla and sticky chocolate were up front on the tongue and as it went to the mid-palate the roasted coffee and malt characters showed up. The blending and aging was really well done indeed. Wish I had another bottle…
Check out all sessions of The Hopry here.
This beer can be found at the brewery only.

“Wish I had another bottle… ”
*wink, wink*
Ha! Anyway, nice review of a beer I’ve long wanted to try, having appreciated the double stout many-a-time, even here in the UK. No chance of that happening, but speaking of superb imperial stouts, have you had a bottle of the ’10 Nightstalker recently? I saw that you reviewed it a year ago, but you MUST try it now if you’ve another bottle (or two) lying around – it is a liquorice, chocolate bomb right now. Sublime.

I actually do still have one bottle of that. I’ll have to give it a go soon…

This beer definitely flew under the radar when it was released. You could pick it up at the brewery for well over a month at the low price of $4 a bottle. This is actually one of my favorites for the style I think because of the blending with the younger stout. Good to see it is holding up well. I haven’t had one since February and with only 2 left I want to save them for tastings. I’m also glad to see that upon making a successful one off beer the brewery decided to throw more Double Stout in barrels and make some more. I’m always amazed that when a very good one off beer is made breweries don’t bother to revisit those beers. (I’m looking at you Ska.)

Just to add, I also am a fan of the base beer, which I’m sure helps in my appreciation of Silva.

I liked the Double Stout but I didn’t love it. Thanks again for sending this one. Really glad to have had it for this week…

Not a problem on sending it over. I probably would have missed the release completely if you hadn’t wanted some Green Flash beers.
