Odell Deconstruction Ale

Session # 199
Odell | Deconstruction Ale
American Wild Ale | Fort Collins, CO | 10.5% ABV

One year ago: Odell India Pale Ale

Over the course of the last year or so, Odell Brewing out of Fort Collins, CO has been making their fair share of barrel-aged beers. At least five that I can think of off the top of my head. Today’s beer, Deconstruction Ale, is a blend (if you will) of three different beers. One aged in oak barrels; one aged in bourbon barrels; and one aged in wine barrels. There is also a portion of it that is just Strong Ale. But there was definitely some thought put in to the blending of this beer. Out of the bottle came a huge jet of white foam before I could even pour it into my glass. It kept creeping throughout the review. The vibrant orange color, however, was amazing. That soft pillowy white head rested right on top. Aromas of funk, oak, citrus and spice abounded. The flavor didn’t stray too far and really reminded me of Orval or Russian River Temptation. Lots of Belgian yeast funk, citrus and oak were predominant on the tongue followed by a nice dry and effervescent finish. Definitely an enjoyable beer if you like funky barrel-aged flavors.

Odell Friek

Session # 184
Odell | Friek
Lambic – Fruit | Ft Collins, Colorado| 6.5% ABV

One year ago: Southern Tier Crème Brûlée

Odell Brewing out of Ft. Collins, Colorado has been making some stellar beers lately. Most recently has been their lineup of barrel-aged beers. When Tim and I reviewed the Saboteur (review here) we were taken aback by how amazing and complex that beer tasted. Today we’re moving on to the Lambic and when it comes to producing these beers, there is simply no one who does it better than the Belgians. Odell has attempted it here by combining two popular styles of Lambic: Framboise and Kriek. The resulting name of Friek was very clever, but unfortunately the execution of the beer fell a bit short of being a strong representation of the style. When I poured this beer from the corked and caged bottle the color was amazing, but the carbonation died before I even set the bottle on the table. A very vigorous pour later yielded a touch more, but… The aroma was of cherry and very light raspberry. I also detected a faint bit of wood character, but not much else. The flavors pretty much matched the aroma, which were mainly tart cherry and a touch of sweetness from raspberry. The mouthfeel, however, is where this beer lost me. While not “watery,” it was surprisingly thin and unassuming on my palate. In short, while this tasted good, a bit more carbonation, some hop bitterness, and a touch of malt body would have done wonders for this beer. Rating: 79/100

Odell Saboteur

Session # 145 | Odell | Saboteur | 10% ABV
American Wild Ale | Fort Collins, Colorado | Rating: 94/100

One year ago: Coronado Hoppy Daze

Odell Brewing Company is a brewery that tends to fall under the radar more times than not. I really love their IPA and try to pick up one of their specialty beers now and then. But it was a recent appearance on Draft Magazine Top 25 Beers of 2010 that piqued my interest in this beer called Saboteur. It’s part of an ever-growing line of beers Odell calls their Single Serve Series. It’s classified by the brewery as a Brett Barrel Brown Ale, and let me tell you it didn’t skimp on any of those descriptions in the bottle. What poured out looked more like a stout than a traditional Brown Ale, and the aromas that came out of the glass were intense. Tim pointed out immediately that it had a sort of steak sauce quality. As we got our nose a bit deeper in the glass we could really smell the intense barrel-aging from the vanilla woody characters and slight funk from the brettanomyces. It was quite an intense and complex event on the nose to be sure. The amount of flavor that came out of this beer was enough to make us both contemplate through the entire bottle. This was definitely an intense Brown Ale with lots of vanilla, tobacco, dark fruits, and burnt caramel on the palate and the mouthfeel was huge. Of all the American Wild Ales I’ve had this year, this one was easily one of the best. I hope there are some left on the shelves because I think I need another one of these someday.

Odell India Pale Ale

Hopry Short # 9 | Odell | IPA | 7% ABV
India Pale Ale | Fort Collins, CO | Rating: 92/100

You know it’s a great day when you’re visiting family out of town and you find a great IPA just sitting in the house. While searching through the garage fridge, I noticed that off in the back were two Odell IPAs that had not been destroyed yet. I immediately grabbed one, headed inside for a glass, and jumped at the opportunity to do an impromptu “short.” After all, this is one of the better single IPAs I’ve had, and if you live in one of the states that carries it chances are you’ve seen it a hundred times. It was a beautiful day out and the beer lived up to it. There is a lot of orange and yellow haze that pours from the bottle and the aroma starts to sneak up out of the glass immediately. There is tons of beautiful citrus and dank pine in the nose and it delivers on the palate just as nicely. This is definitely one you should have in your fridge at all times, because for this price it’s pretty tough to beat.
